Recuerdo su impresionante set en OEF 2012. Fue brutal y a la vez muy divertido. Qué recuerdos tienen ustedes de aquella aventura europea?
Gracias hermano, te agradezco que hayas disfrutado de nuestro set. Era la primera vez que tocábamos en el Mundialmente FamosoObscene Extreme!!Qué honor para nosotros compartir el escenario con tantas excelentes bandas europeas y americanas. OEF fue la última parada para nosotros en un viaje que hicimos con la banda rusa de Death Metal CephalicImpurity. El festival fue la cereza en el postre para nosotros. También tocamos en el Extreme Fest durante el recorrido. Dos festivales europeos asesinos en una gira esalgo enfermo.
Malignancy parece que no se conforma con su nivel técnico y en cada album empujan sus habilidades más allá ¿Qué tan difícil fue escribir las canciones de “Eugenics”?
Una vez más, gracias por el apoyo, tratamos de ponernos a prueba e ir más allá de nuestras propias fronteras para crear algo que nadie ha escuchado antes. No es una tarea fácil en absoluto y estamos tratando todavía, hahah. La escritura en “Eugenics” fue muy intensa a veces, pero en su mayor parte se trató de una gran experiencia. Mi guitarrista, Ron y el baterista Mike, colaboraron un montón juntos para éste. Por lo general, todos ponemos nuestra creatividad juntos al escribir nuevo material. Para “Eugenics”, tomé asiento para dedicarme a hacer los arreglos y la escritura y mirar / escuchar la locura que esos dos crearon. Me encanta. Además yo quería centrarse más en el contenido de las letras y exprimir la carne de lo que realmente quería decir.
Sus canciones son increíblemente complejas pero en vivo lo hacen parecer un paseo en el parque. ¿Cómo han llegado a tal nivel para tocar?
Supongo que ser una banda durante 20 anos, es lo que hace que parezca de esa manera. Tocar una canción más de 100 veces al ano, definitivamente te hace el más competente para estar ahí tocándola. Mi guitarrista, Ron ha estado tocando la mayor parte de su vida y él se las arregla para seguir sorprendiéndonos con su enfoque poco ortodoxo para escribir / tocar.
Malignancy toco sin bajo en OEF 2012, aún así la performance fue brutal. ¿Qué ocurrió aquella vez?
Por desgracia, teníamos que hacerlo, nuestra bajista de sesión, Roger, tenía algunos problemas familiares y no pudo acompanarnos en el viaje. Roger está bien ahora. Tenemos un nuevo bajista propio de New Jersey, MontyMukerji de Mortal Decay. También se presentará con nuestro baterista Mike, quien se encuentra en un pequeño descanso de Fear Factory.
Vuelven esta vez a OEF America, ¿qué recuerdan de sus anteriores visitas a Mexico? ¿Qué esperan del público mexicano?
Wow, es un gran honor para nosotros jugar de nuevo México. Esta será nuestra cuarta vez en México y no podemos esperar para embrutecerlos con el nuevo material de “Eugenics”. El público mexicano es igual que las multitudes europeas mortales, pero yo tendría que decir que son un poco más enfermos. La música está en la SANGRE!
Malignancy tiene un extrano sentido del humor que se mezcla con letras que tocan temas bastante serios. ¿Por qué creen que el death metal no debería ser siempre tan rígido y serio?
Hhahaha, sí tenemos un extrano sentido del humor o tal vez sea sólo yo. Disfruto de divertirme estando en el escenario y entretener a la audiencia. Yo soy fan de esta música también y me gusta cuando te sientes como si fueras parte del set. Algunas bandas de Death Metal son muy en serio, demasiado en serio si me preguntas. I remember your impressive set at OEF 2012. It was brutal but at the same time incredibly fun. What do you remember of that Europeanadventure?
Thank you brother, we appreciate that you enjoyed our set. It was our first time performing at the World Famous Obscene Extreme! What an honor for us to share the stage with so many excellent European and American acts. OEF was the last stop for us on a tour we did with Russian Death Metal band Cephalic Impurity. The festival was cherry on the cake for us. We also played Extreme Fest during the tour. Two killer European fests on one tour is sick.
Malignancy seems that is non-conformed with technicality and every new album pushes your skills harder. How difficult was the songwriting process for Eugenics?
Again, thank you for the props, we try to test ourselves and go beyond our own boundaries to create something no one has heard before. Not an easy task at all and we are still trying, hahah. The writing on Eugenics was pretty intense at times but for the most part it was a great experience. My guitarist, Ron and drummer Mike, did a lot of collaborating together for this one. We usually all put our creativity together when writing new material. For Eugenics, I took a backseat to the arrangements and writing and watched/listened to the insanity that those two created. Love it. Plus I wanted to center more on the lyrically content and really flesh out what I wanted to say.
Your songs are very complex but in live shows you make it look like a walk in the park. How do you arrive to that skill to play?
I guess it is being a band for 20 years that makes it appear that way. Playing a song over 100 times a year definitely makes you the most proficient you can be at performing it. My guitarist, Ron has been playing most of his life and he still manages to surprise us with his unorthodox approach to writing/playing.
Malignancy played without bass in OEF 2012, but the performance was brutal. What happened that time?
Unfortunately we had to, our session bass player, Roger, had some family issues and he could not join us on the tour. Roger is doing well now. We have a new bassists from New Jersey's own Mortal Decay, Monty Mukerji. We will also be performing with our drummer Mike, who is on a little break from Fear Factory.
You are going to OEF America, what do you remember of your previous shows in Mexico? What do you expect of mexican audience?
Wow, it is an great honor for us to play Mexico again. This will be our fourth time in Mexico and we cannot wait to brutalize them with the new Eugenics material. The Mexican audience is just like the killer European crowds but I would have to say they are just a little sicker. Music is in the BLOOD!
Malignancy has a strange sense of humor mixed with lyrics that touch serious issues. Why you believe that death metal shouldn’t be so rigid and serious?
Hhahaha, yes we do have a strange sense of humor or perhaps it is just me. I enjoy being fun on stage and to engage the audience. I am fan of this music too and I like it when you feel like you are part of the show. Some Death Metal bands are very serious, too serious if you ask me.
